When we have several computers in a home or office, one of the features we seek is to be able to easily share files and resources between them. Although while they are on the same network, everyone will be visible to each other, there are a series of rules that we must configure so that the folders can be shared on the network. To avoid this configuration process, we can create a home network, through which we can share files with other computers in the same home and access theirs and their resources without problems.
In this manual, we are going to teach you how to create a local network and share resources between two or more Windows computers within the same home network. To do this, For example, in our case, we are going to use two computers:
- IP: 192.168.1.2
- Mask: 255.255.255.0
- IP: 192.168.1.20
- Mask: 255.255.255.0
Once we have the two computers with the IPs configured correctly we begin to configure the network.
How to configure team and workgroup names
The first thing we must do is assign each computer a computer name (with which they will be identified on the network) and a workgroup where they will share the information. If we want two or more computers to connect, then each one must have a different name but all of them belong to the same workgroup.
To do this, from our Windows desktop, we right-click on “This computer” and open the computer’s properties window.
Here, in the “Name, domain, and workgroup configuration” section, click on the “Change configuration” button.
Here we will see a section called “Description”, where we can add, just for informational purposes, a small description about the computer.
To change both the team name and the workgroup we must click on the «Change» button. We will see a new window like the following one.
From here we will be able to change the configuration of the equipment. The first thing we will do is give the team a unique name in the network. We will also assign a new group. By default, Windows usually assigns “Workgroup” as a workgroup, however, we can put whatever we want, as long as it is the same on all computers.
Once the changes are made, we restart the computer so that they are applied correctly. When we reconnect, we will do so within the new group and with the new name for the network.
How to configure a HomeGroup to add multiple computers to it
Once we have the computers already configured in terms of IP, computer name, and workgroup, the next thing we must do is create a new workgroup.
To do this, we open the Control Panel and go to the Networks and Internet> HomeGroup section.
Here, we will click on «Create a group at home» and a new window will open from which we will create the group.
We continue with the group creation wizard and then we can choose the elements that we are going to share. We can share images, videos, music, documents, devices, and printers. It is not necessary to share everything since we can choose in each case the permissions that we give.
We must bear in mind that everything we mark will be automatically shared with the rest of the members of the group, so we must not save sensitive information in it.
After a few seconds, the wizard will create the workgroup and provide us with a password, which the rest of the users must use to connect to the same workgroup (for security reasons).
Clever. Our computer already belongs to said Home Group created. From this section of the control panel, we will be able to configure at all times what we share with others, as well as change the password to access the group and leave the household group, in case we no longer want to continue being part of it.
This process is the longest. Once completed, Windows will automatically detect the HomeGroup in the workgroup in which we are connected and will ask us, instead of creating a new one, to connect to it.
For this, we simply need the group password and choose the data that we want to share on each team and that’s it. We will automatically be part of the group, and sharing our data with everyone else.
How a Homegroup works in Windows
Once the computers are connected to the HomeGroup, we have nothing else to do. To be able to see the files of all of them and copy from them to our computer or vice versa, all we have to do is open the Windows file explorer and, on the side, choose the “HomeGroup” section.
All the shared folders of all the computers that belong to said Home Group will automatically appear.
Now we can access them with total freedom. We can enjoy the utility of the Windows HomeGroup in a simple and accessible way from our devices.
Windows HomeGroup Utility
Today we have a large number of computers connected to the Internet. Having more than one computer in our home is very common. For example, we can have a desktop computer and also a laptop. This means that on certain occasions we work or use one, while sometimes it is the other that we use the most. Perhaps the laptop has more capacity to edit videos, but the desktop computer has more storage to store those videos. In this way, we can access the content from one to another with ease.
We can also share files and documents with other family members. In this way, we will achieve that from the same computer we can enter the videos or images stored on another computer to gain accessibility and have everything available at any time in a simple way.
In short, the HomeGroup in Windows is something very interesting and as we have seen we can easily configure it. It gives us extra usability when using networked equipment. Even more so today, when we have more and more devices that are part of our day-to-day. Also, as we know, Windows is the most widely used operating system on desktop computers.
